2. ORPP Screening and Preliminary Intervention for Pediatric SLPs (1 Day)

Course Description: The ORPP Introduction and Screening course is a one-day course aimed at highlighting a key link between orofacial myofunctional disorders [OMDs] and articulation ~ proper oral rest posture. Attendees will learn how to identify this common, yet often unidentified barrier to successful speech articulation treatment and will received personalized materials they can use in their practice the very next day!

Learning Objectives: At the end of this one-day course attendees will be able to:

  • Define orofacial myofunctional disorders.
  • Recognize the potential impact of dentition on articulation.
  • Screen and identify neurotypical children with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs).
  • Understand how poor oral rest posture impacts a child’s prognosis for speech articulation therapy.
  • Determine appropriate early intervention (including education, referral recommendations and preliminary treatment strategies) to help minimize the impact of the OMDs on both speech articulation and dental development.

Target Audience: School and preschool-based speech language pathologists.

3. Comprehensive ORPP Assessment and Treatment Program (4 Day Intensive)

Course Description: This 4-day dynamic and hands-on course includes theory, demonstration and hands-on practice learning. The goal of this 4-day course is to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of what OMDs are as well as the knowledge, skill and confidence to appropriately identify, diagnose and successfully treat them. Attendees will leave this course with the knowledge and tools required to put their new skills immediately into action in current practice and/or as a foundation to develop a successful and effective private practice. Attendees will work through and receive the personalized ORPP framework and resources including: ORPP assessment protocol and all ORPP treatment/home exercise forms and business development materials.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course attendees will have an understanding of:

  • The specialty area of orofacial myology.
  • Anatomy and Physiology related to orofacial myology: orofacial development, orofacial muscle identification and function, normal versus undesirable, chew/bolus collection process and swallow patterns.
  • Proper Oral Resting Postures of the lips, tongue and jaw, nasal breathing versus chronic open mouth posture
  • Etiologies that might interrupt proper orofacial development.
  • Noxious habits/digit-sucking
  • Medical issues as they relate to OMD evaluation and treatment (airway obstruction, recognizing symptoms associated with disorders of sleep disordered breathing, decreased oral airway and other associated breathing difficulties syndromes, etc)
  • The complex issue of ankyloglossia including identifying lingual, labial and buccal restrictions and how they impact functional oral motor resting and oral motor patterns.
  • Airway and dysfunctional breathing patterns that impact oral structures and the resulting dysfunctional patterns.
  • Dental/Orthodontic Fundamentals including Occlusion, Malocclusion, Structural versus environment causes, Orthodontic appliances, Dentofacial differences and Palatal expansion devices.
  • OMD Diagnostics and Evaluation for pediatric and adult clients including: Case History, Evaluation and Treatment Planning.
  • ORPP Treatment Framework and individualizing treatment from conception through retention with specific focus on habituation and timing of discharge.
  • ORPP Framework for Behavioural Therapy including the principles of motor learning, neuroplasticity and scaffolding cueing for success.
  • Community Collaboration with referral team - building your team, understanding when and why to refer to an Otolaryngologist (ENT), dentist, Ankyloglossia release providers, orthodontist and/or allergist regarding patency of the airway, release of restrictive tissues, and the role of nasal sprays and washes.
  • Asepsis for the orofacial myologist.
  • ORPP Business Basics including practice management: forms, scheduling, treatment planning, record keeping, documentation and marketing
  • How to plan for success through history taking, evaluation, measurements, report writing, treatment planning and treatment cueing.
